  • a good read

More than a decade ago, I read Ken Follett’s book, " The Pillars of the Earth".  The story line follows the building of a cathedral.  It has stuck with me all these years and caused me to look with amazement at the near miracle that are these still standing monuments to human strength and endurance.  A week ago, I came across the sequel.  It is hard to put down.  There are over 1000 pages competing with my knitting time.  Good thing that C has the TV on for a time each evening to distract me away from my reading.  I’m a sucker for Follett’s books.  I think I’ve read all of them.  This one’s a winner.

    1. I think I’ve read all of his, too, and loved “Pillars”. Will have to look for this one!

    2. I loved Pillars of the Earth when I read it years ago and have read many of Follett’s books since. I read it again this past spring and loved reading it all over again. Thanks for letting me know it is a great read. I’ve moved it to the top of my list of books to buy.

You know, I was wondering about these books. I need to read the first one first, wouldn’t you agree? Thanks for the review!

    6. Another Me Too on Pillars of the Earth! I couldn’t put it down. Off to order this one now . . . thanks for the heads up!

    7. There’s been quite a discussion among the Audiobooks Knitters at Ravelry about this book. I have it on my wish list for next year. I loved Pillars.

    8. I’ve not read any of his books. I’ve heard that Pillars of the earth is a great book. I’ll have to check it out.

    9. I didn’t know about the sequel. Must read. Thanks.

I adored Pillars of the Earth and just finished World Without End. Fabulous story even if it did take me away from my knitting.

  • casting on

When I dyed the yarn for the Cresting Waves Scarf, I also dyed some of my sock yarn in the same "atlantic" colorway.  I had thought that I’d make some wristers to match.  After thinking about the pattern a bit, I decided I wanted it to be a bit more solid, and I wanted a place to add the thumb, and a solid stockinette for the palm.  This will create a left and a right mitt, but that shouldn’t be a problem.  Last Friday, while riding the train home,  I cast on.

I haven’t gotten far.  As I’ve worked out the stitch, I’ve had to rip back, rip out and start over and generally punt as I thought about it.  Another project also went onto the needles a day or so later.  It is the Hourglass Pullover from Last Minute Knitted GiftsKelly was wearing hers the first time I met her, and it has stuck in my mind as a must knit.  All stockinette, knit on circular needles, it is a perfect knit for watching TV or taking to meetings.

It calls for a turned under hem, to be sewn in after the fact.  I’m a little nervous about it.  Hems often have a way of flipping up or just plain making a thick band around the bottom.  I decided to alter the pattern and make a picot edge.  Then, I basted the hem and started to stitch it, first separating the plies in my sewing yarn to a half thickness in hopes of less bulk.

My fingers are crossed.   (I think I have a "thing" going with this color.. it’s got me everywhere I turn.)

    1. I love that color, too!

    2. YUM! I can see why you like that color so well!

    3. Hourglass is a great knit and is very easy to pick up at any turn. It’s a beautiful color, I can see why you are entranced by it.

    4. cyndy

      Good idea on the alteration!

    5. I like your hem modification, I would never have thought of separating to half the thickness. Make sense!
The picot is a lovely little touch.

    6. Hourglass sweater is really a lovely pattern, to knit and to wear. I love mine. The colors in yours are very beautiful!
When you make your second one (because it’s that kind of pattern), consider using a 3rd needle and joining the turned edge as soon as the outside half reaches the same length. This way you skip the sewing, and if it doesn’t work you just frog the last few rows – I hope that makes sense..

The Ledbetters, aren’t they beautiful with the antique button inlay?  They spin as beautifully as the look.  And from sweet Carole, my first Greensleeves, in the most amazing spaulted maple I have ever seen.

While I stood at the Carolina Homespun booth, test spinning spindle after spindle, Marcy handed out this advice: Buy both, spindles cost less than a wheel.  True.  She’s good, and I’m easy.

    1. What great advice;-) I’ve seen pictures of many fabulous spindles from the Festival. Your two are very special.

    2. Manise

Such sage advice from Marcy 🙂 So if 5 wheels makes one a wheel ho, how many spindles does one have to have to be a spindle slut? I’d love to see how many you’ve amassed! Seriously those spindles are gorgeous!

    3. Marcy’s like that. And she HAS a point. Beautiful.

    4. It was nice to see you!

    5. I like to share my wiser wisdoms with my slutty friends. 😀

    6. Marcy definitely has the right idea….I LIKE that woman! I took her advice too… 🙂

    7. Ooh, those spindles are pretty!!

    8. Wowee Zowee! Beautiful spindles. Yes, Greensleeves have the most beautiful woods. I have several that I bought just because I couldn’t decide between this wood grain and that wood grain. But those button tops are so cute.

    9. Those are absolutely gorgeous.

    10. What gorgeous treasures!

    11. Truly unique and beautiful. Marcy speaks truth, but is a fearfully effective enabler.

    12. I love Marcy.

    13. You have such good taste! I remember admiring the Ledbetters. I really like both the ones you chose.
And the Greensleeves… well. You can’t go wrong!

    14. The spindles are so beautiful, just looking at them is a treat !

    15. Ooo, they’re lovely! Getting both was definitely the right decision.

    16. Holy crap, they’re gorgeous. That IS good advice…I never thought of it that way before.

    17. Easy. Very easy.
      😉

    18. heee hee. By the time I get all of the spindles I want, I could’ve had a good wheel. But I wouldn’t trade them in for anything!
