The weather finally cleared, and with it came the arrival of winter. Knowing it was coming, I took advantage of the last (we’ll see) of the mild weather, and walked in the rain.
Today, with the drop in temperature, I was glad I did.
Today, there was bright light, and color!
I’m dyeing. I’ve done more that two dozen dyebaths since Friday afternoon. I’m into my second 2 gallon watering can of water. Once the weather turns cold, I have to carry my water to my dyeing area. The outdoor hoses and tanks have been drained for the winter. With such little water used, it isn’t much of an inconvenience. Most of the water used leaves as steam, a bit more drips into the pan or onto the floor as I change colors.
This cold, raw, grey weather is a perfect time to play with color. Sunday I went for a short hike in the woods, sort of looking for inspiration. It was raining and the colors were muted. I came home and dyed a 2 ply in greys and browns. It looked like a sparrow. I figured that was enough for a theme and went on to dye another resembling swallows. I’m back to COLORS. That and something hot to drink.
There is yarn in the pot, and more soaking to be ready for this afternoon. Maybe there will be time for another short walk, before the really frigid temps settle in.
Very lovely tie, dye and ply. I like the Sparrow and Swallow colors. Very nicely named. Is that also some Aegean next to the Swallow? I lived near the Aegean growing up with sparrows and swallows flying around.
Beautiful colors! It definitely brightens things up around here in New England after the last couple of days.
Enjoy your hike – it’s supposed to get real cold tomorrow night. Something like 8 degrees!

Those colours are simply gorgeous! I do so want to learn to dye – it’s really a necessary step to translating our own experience of nature into textile isn’t it?

I love the reds; also the oranges. Even though winter has been okay, I think that we are all craving more color; more warmth.
That’s a beautiful batch of colors! The skies can be gray there, but you can make a rainbow! Love tha sparrow!

Thanks for your well wishes – the ice storm has hit the Ozarks VERY hard. I came up to my office this morning hoping to find power… imagine my surprise when we had internet too! Unfortunately I think we’re going to have to bail out and head home (where there is no power) soon, because another wave of storms is coming through!

Ooh! Aah! What a sunset picture! It reminds me of those locket pictures of sunsets in Florida that were made of butterfly wings when I was a kid. Someone would come back from vacation with one of those, and we’ld all stand around and say the above. (Of course, that was back in the 50’s, when we didn’t know any better.)
