    Before…

The decoration on the wreath is a robin nest and it makes it a bit hard to use the door that is next to it. We’re so worried about them.

One of the three flew out and away this afternoon. Three adult robins took after it, very excited. The baby landed then hopped into the woods, still with the adults. I wanted to rescue, return it to the nest. They were moving away pretty fast and I didn’t want to frighten them away. I was always told you shouldn’t touch a baby bird. I hope Mom and Dad get the chick back in the air. It flew very well…

If the baby flew well, then it was ready to leave the nest. I’d expect the others to follow within a day or so (although if they’re smart, they’ll wait till it stops raining!).

There’s always one that fledges much earlier than the others and always one that lags behind. It’s amazing that they can fly with that tiny stub of a tail they have at that age. What it curious to me is why 3 adult robins would go after it? Were they not the parents? I hope the rest are smart and wait out the rain before attempting to leave the nest. What a soggy day.

Whatis it with robins & doors? They always pick the most heavily trafficked places for their nests. I am convinced they are the dumbest bird.

lots of songbirds fledge before they are independent. the parents will get it to a safe place to shelter and will continue to feed it while they teach it to find food for itself. This is a really challenging time for the parents because they have a fledgeling and nestlings to take care of but most babies survive and prosper every year.

    5. I would have had the same reaction. I was always told never to touch baby birds either. I’m still not sure if that’s correct though?

    6. Had a titmouse fledger die in the yard last week. Very sad. But Lynn told me that it isn’t unusual for that to happen. Seeing it was definitely TMI.

  • Friday’s Photo

I have many orchids.  Although they bloom off and on year round, most begin blooming in May and display through the summer.  This is a shot of a few that are crammed together on a shelf in my back room.

    1. I have never seen so many orchid blossoms in one place! They are stunning!

    2. Your orchids are gorgeous. I just can’t seem to get those to survive in my house…

Hi Judy. Love your orchids! I have one which my cousin gave me as a gift this past Christmas. Unfortunately it didn’t get off to a great start, lost all its blooms, and the stalk had to be cut off to the base. I’ve now learned how to properly care for it now (watering) and it’s recovering nicely! It has new growth, and a new stalk developing. I’m so excited and enjoying watching it grow. I will be bursting when it blooms again!
Do you do anything special for your orchids, like misting, fertilizer, etc? Or do you just water them and keep them in their happy place?

    4. Clearly, your orchids enjoy living with you, as much as you enjoy living with them 😉
      beautiful!

    5. I water weekly and feed with miracle grow when I remember. Just dont overwater.

  • walk with me wednesday.. signs of summer

May 31st.  We are now, officially 'after Memorial Day'.  Memorial Day used to be May 30th, no matter what day of the week it fell on.  That was before congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill and we moved them wherever to give us three day weekends.   The beaches, state and federal parks are open for business. From now til Columbus Day, we get to pay to use them, rest rooms will be open and rangers and guards visible.  Right?  It is summer.

Sort of.  It sure feels like summer.  In the woods, the tree pollen is the giveaway.   The past few days, the pines have been releasing it as sticky yellow clouds .  Hard to see and hard to breathe. Yesterday, when I walked, it finally seemed a bit clearer.

The leaves have polka dots, painted with pollen.  What we need now is a good rain to wash it all away and clear the air.

So much lush vegetation.  Soft.  Fecund.  Sweet.

I love the laurel.  Bouquets unto themselves.  Such a surprise to come upon hanging there amongst so much greenery.

There is this… what all the spring rains have revealed.  I'll go back for some better pictures, I am such a sucker for texture.

I'll wait until the pollen clears, I can just about focus.  Then, summer.

    1. Enough with the pollen, right? It seems worse this year than usual.

    2. That is some fantastic looking texture!

    3. Is that a vine growing on the tree? Love the patterning!
Yeah, I’m about sick of the pollen, too…
