  • ends are beginnings.. Happy New Year

It has been one of those years.  Time goes so fast that I don't know that I want it to be over, but then.. it was one of those years.  It'll take some time to put it to rest.  Maybe it will remain an uncomfortable spot in my memory, not really painful, but more like a scratchy wool collar, chafing, just a bit.  Some years are like that.  Time will tell.

For the last day of December, it was a gorgeous day, warm and sunny.  The white winter sun reflected off the snow.  Friends asked if I'd like to join in on a trip to the botanical gardens.  If it weren't today, the last day of the year and beautiful, I would have gone along.  To be in a warm humid place, surrounded by tropical plants sounded pretty good.  But on this day, more than most others, I need to take to the woods.  I get my bearings, perspective, and sense of place in time.  Something.  It is a special time for me.  Have you ever noticed that the sunlight in winter is whiter?  Colder?  Of course, it is.  We know that, we learned it.  But to be in the woods on a day like today, you see it.  Feel it.

I planned on taking pictures, and I did some.  The walk was more important.  Slogging in boots through the snow for 1 1/2 miles, up and down hills, is as strenuous as a three miler in sneakers.  I stopped, to look and to catch my breath.  I listened to the water rushing through the ice. The best of music.

When I came back to the house, it was nearing sundown.  The flock of turkeys that moved in a few years ago were coming in for the night.  They've taken to roosting in the woods on the south side of the house.  I brewed a pot of tea while they gathered, then went to the window to watch the show.

As the sun went down for the last time this year, I lit my candle.  (Carry the light from the old to the new.)  The turkeys did as they do every evening. They flew into the tops of the trees and settled in for the night.  There it is. Continuity.  Flow of the water, melting of snow, day..sunset..night.  Old year. New Year.

Wishing you all a happy, healthy New Year!

Glad you got some time in the woods!
And glad you took some time to write about it…you had a beautiful sunset on the last day of the year~
Health and Happiness in the New Year to you and yours!

Happy New Year Judy! My sunrise looked very similar. It was nice to get out today without any Arctic chill and soak in the suns rays. Glad you did too! Thanks for sharing your walk. I always love those posts and wonderful photos.

    4. This post is just so YOU, Judy. I know how much you love the woods and I’m glad you got the restorative and reflective time you needed there. Happy New Year!

    5. You have a beautiful tradition. Happy New Year, Judy, It’s nice to see you blog again.

    6. Happy New Year. Hope it is a better year for you and yours.

    7. Happy New Year to you, too, Judy. Lovely walk and wonderful to watch the wild things.

    8. Happy New Year to you, too! Thank you for the walk in the woods. I only walked up to the sheep’s pen – they weren’t very interested in New Year’s wishes…

    9. Oh, how I’ve missed your posts! The wool collar analogy was spot on for me, and here’s hoping that 2011 is better for us both!

  • Lillian Fay

Last weekend Lillian Fay went to the fair. I was hoping that she and her sister would accompany me this weekend. Almost. The button bands are nearly done. Then there is a bit of finishing.
    I’ll have a Rhinebeck sweater.

Come see us this weekend at the Vermont Sheep and Wool Festval, in Tunbridge VT. It is one of the prettiest fairgrounds on NewEngland. The hills are a blaze with color. By tonight, the rain will have passed, thank goodness. We’re promised a sunny weekend.

      I didn’t realize that it’s a kit! Oooh, I need one of those. 🙂

    4. Sorry I missed VT S&W this year. *sigh*
I would have loved to see Lillian Fay. And you, of course!

    5. I wish I’d been there 😉
      I miss the fall colors.

  • Perfect Wednesday

There is something a bit magical in a summer's morning. Maybe it's the light, or the way the warm air carries the scents. Most days, I step outside, stretch my arms and take in the freshness even before I start the coffee. (Not much before, but.. before.)

That said, this morning was glorious. With coffee in hand, I went onto the deck with my new little inkle loom. One cup ran into another, so to speak. I can't begin to explain the attraction. It's fun to watch the colors blend and take shape. It just is.

It doesn't get much better than this. But, there was broccoli to cut, raspberries to pick.. and weeding. Back in the kitchen, the broccoli joined half a sweet onion, some garlic, mushrooms and feta in a quiche. Dinner done. I took the afternoon off and headed to the Old Stone House to spin. Such a lovely place, it feels like it sits on top of the world. My camera was in my bag. I had good intentions. Around 3pm the sky darkened and the rain started. The forecast was ominous, threats of high winds, heavy rain and the possibility of one inch hail. I left without the pictures.

    * luckily, we only had rain, some had inches of huge hail and the wind.

** blogged from my cell, not too successfully, lol!

Pretty inkle colors! Very nicely blogged from your cell btw. We got a quick moving storm an hour ago. Heavy rain and lots of thunder and lightening. Another small cell is approaching now.

    2. Your deck looks like a fabulous place to drink coffee and inkle.

    3. Sniff. I still miss Vermont. A lot.

    4. Your deck looks very inviting. It makes me wish it was cool enough to enjoy our patio and our lake. le sigh…I’ll just continue looking out the window, here in the air conditioning.
      Bring on autumn!

Crap. I knew I forgot something yesterday. Sigh…

    6. That is a beautiful summer picture….and inkle band :)!

    7. Aren’t these inkle bands like peanuts, or potato chips? Can’t stop at one! The Rowan Cotton Glace is working great, by the way. Are your edges getting better? Mine aren’t perfect, but much better on this band.

    8. Looks wonderful. Wish I could be there, too. Beats the hosp AC, and crazy people, demanding surgeons, and can’t win days.

    9. such a gorgeous spot – I can imagine that there are many of us who would love to be weaving out there on the deck 😉
what will you do with the narrow woven bands?

    10. Susanne

I would probably never be inside if that was my “deck surround” view! Simply gorgeous!!!

    11. I’ve really enjoyed your blog, so much so that a friend picked up on all my blabbing and bought me a spindle. Now to look around for some roving, hope some local stores have it. I’ll be reading your previous posts to get a better idea of things.

    12. That deck looks great, I wish that I could eat my breakfast there every morning.

    13. The deck looks so peaceful and the thought of picking fresh raspberries – YUM!!! I too was just given a spindle and will begin the adventure of spindling. I’ll have to explore your posts to see your experiences with it. Everytime I read your posts on yogurt it awakens an urge to try making my own, eventually I’ll try my hand at that too. You really do inspire others to try new things!

    14. I love those yarn colors – they look so beautiful together!
