  • walk with me wednesday.. otters again

    P1000086

Days of warm and sunny weather, followed by 10 hours of
heavy rain washed most of the remaining snow from the fields.  Not so, for the woods or the pond.  I love a day like this, when fog rolls across
the hills, not once, but time and again as the temperature struggles to match
the surrounding environment.  Wet air in motion.  Visibly.

    P1000069

Zak heads down to the pond earlier than I do.  I’m still drinking my coffee when he returns
with a very large and very much alive mole.
Thankfully, the cat door is still closed and he has to wait at the door
with his prize.  When he puts it down to
be admired, it races away.  Close one!!   I finish my coffee and we head out for a
    walk.  Bigger creatures are surfacing.

    P1000055

    I
had only my little pocket camera.  The
quality isn’t good.  All day we watched
the otter family. There are three.  The
youngster climbs onto his parent’s back to get a better look at us.  The male (perhaps) remains in the water with
only his head above the ice.

We watch each other.  I whistle.  They know that they are safe and don't bother to dive.  Holes
are everywhere in the ice, like manholes on a city street.   Up they come with another fish.  It is no wonder that we never have fish of reasonable
size in the pond.  The otter live
here.  ‘Old timers’ tell us that they
caught the biggest trout around, right here, in this pond, when they were
kids.  Not so anymore.  Is that a frog this time?  Even with my binoculars I can’t be sure.

    1. Otters are so much fun to watch! Thanks for the photos.

    2. Very, very cool.

    3. I’ve never seen live otters. That is so neat. And I like your visible moisture description.

    4. Manise

Nice photos! How nice to have otters in your pond. 🙂

    5. It must have been wondrous to see the little otters! Very cool, indeed.

So cool to be able to walk over and watch otters not contained in a zoo habitat! The occasional raccoon family in the water feature or fox spotting are about as wild as it gets here, although I did watch a hawk tear up a pigeon at the end of the driveway one day. Try to explain that stain on the pavement to the neighbors…

    7. Your otters look very healthy! Nice that the area sustains them (and their healthy appetites!)
A very nice walk, your otters remind me to smile, strive to be carefree- and take time for fun.
great similie- (“like manholes on a city street”)

    8. I love to watch Otters, the only opportunity I get is if I visit the Central California coast. They are so sweet floating on their backs while consuming abalone or something in a shell. It’s lovely that you take us along for your wonderful strolls.

    9. Otters are such fun to watch! Lucky you!

  • I don’t do dead mice..

Surprised?  Whatever, it's one of those things.

So.. when I sat at my desk this morning, answering the phone and doing basic office stuff, blissfully unaware of what lay below, it was me that was in for a surprise.  It came in the middle of a phone call.  I could barely speak, think or remain seated.  Then I calmed down, desperately tried to maintain a little bit of cool while I finished the conversation (something about an order for holiday plants), took the picture and wrote this post.

No socks, I always wear socks..  and yes, I could use a pedicure.  Where IS THAT CAT!

Now to find a glove.  Silly, I know.  I think I need a walk.

Bet there's something you don't do.

    1. Ewwww. But at least it was dead.

    2. AnnaMarie

ZOMG!!! My Corgi girls would have eaten it before I even saw it, little snarfers.
I don’t do dog barf, that’s a job for Super Husband.

    3. Katie K

What a cute mouse; it looks like someone’s pet. Nothing like a subway rat.

    4. Are you sure the cats didn’t leave it for you to discover, so you’d be proud of them? And yes, I’ve removed dead mice from my house. Frankly, I’d rather remove dead ones than catch and remove the live ones the cats are chasing at 2 AM some nights!

    5. Tongs.
      You need tongs.
      I’m just sayin’…

    6. At least it’s not in the laundry–that’s happened to me.

    7. Ewwwww, yes, I’m voting for the cat(s) left it for you as a prezzie. Nice of them, huh?

    8. Better dead than alive. I have one in the basement I’ve been ignoring. They seem to mummify rather than rot. Bleah.

    9. Blech! I found one once in my washer (I had left the lid up on my old washer and was soaking socks – really gross! I probably would have gotten a little trowel – double yuck! I walk is really in order – deep cleansing breaths.

    10. eeekkk!
Bet you put socks on your feet today.

    11. Eeek! At least he’s small. You should see the rats who now stalk the subway platforms – not just the tracks below…

    12. Manise

Sorry , but I can’t stop laughing! I’d be skeeved out too esp with the bare feet almost touching it- or did you accidentally touch it?? Perish the thought!

    13. The cat is off, pleased at punch, having done a nice thing for you and is getting gradually more irritated as time goes by and you don’t send a thank you of some kind. Now the cat is confused. “Didn’t she like my gift? Did she notice it? Is she taking me for granted? I never get the respect I deserve! And I thought she would be so happy. What do I have to do around here to make people notice?”

    14. yikes!!! I don’t do mice either – I’d have been screaming my head off so kudos to you for keeping your cool!

    15. oh…it looks like a pet mouse. I thought you’d be saying in your post how it got loose & died!

    16. Geez – looks like what was in the hamster cage last night. I don’t do dead anything, thank you very much.
Are you sure the cat didn’t leave it for you? Mine used to do that all the time. Such a sweet heart, he was.

    17. Our little cat loves to bring us presents, too. She’s always so proud of herself…

  • walk with me.. other signs

    Symplocarpus foetidus..

Right on time, the skunk cabbage is poking through the swamp and muck..  After all the rain we had last week, I was wondering if I'd be able to find it or if it would be under the flooded banks of vernal pools and rushing streams.  I was prepared to get my feet wet.  But there it was, waiting, where I always find it.

One of the great things about blogging, or keeping a journal of any sort, is the ability to see where you were in the past.  The season feels early this year.  It isn't.  I've found skunk cabbage in this week 4 out of the past 5 years.  ( I find that fascinating… don't judge, we all have our interests.)  Posts on march 23, 28, 15, and 17th.

Remember the big acorns I found last fall?  Take a look..

    P1000048

    bursting with new life!

    P1000046

    Bet you'd hardly recognize them.

I’ll have to go out back and check out my vernal pool for the cabbages. Great shot of the sprouting acorn! From a bug’s eye view!

    2. I sure will recognize all the oak seedlings I will be pulling up.
I keep (sort of) a journal that documents what when in the growing seasons.

    3. Susie

Glad to hear the skunk cabbage is on schedule — everything else seems a little early…But we’re back to early spring weather next week!

    4. Ok, thats just darn cool! Thanks for sharing all of your walks, it is really fun to see what you see.

    5. So nice to see the woods waking up.
      and so it begins, again.

    6. Lovely photo of the acorn – I need to get my nose to the ground more.
