winter weekend

All this cold windy weather has been a great excuse for hanging around my studio and working on some new projects.  Somehow, when the weather is warm and lovely, I have a hard time staying indoors.  I start feeling guilty about not accomplishing one thing or another.  Not in this weather.  Maybe that is one of the reasons I love winter.  Friday afternoon, knowing that the spinning guild meeting was Saturday afternoon, and that I was going to get to Slater Mill early to hear a lecture by Laurie Carlson in the morning, I decided to prepare the fiber I would want to spin.  A quick note here.. Laurie Carlson is a fiber artist / weaver/ designer working with fiber optics and space age materials.  If you're curious and  want to read a bit about some of the work she does, check out this article.  I'm fascinated.  I think we both were at MIT's Media Lab around the same time.  Wish I'd run into her way back then.  So interesting.

Getting back to my more traditional materials.. shetland wool and a carder.

I'm carding approximately 1/3 dyed shetland with 2/3 natural (in this case a lovely soft almost taupe fleece).

After a bit of carding, I spindle sampled some and decided on a 3 ply worsted weight yarn as my finished product.  I'm spinning it accordingly.  I have plenty to card.

It was pretty close to a perfect weekend.
