Smatterings

By 10 am yesterday morning my lines had fried, no phone.  Moisture, corrosion, more of the same.  An endless saga,  I’m the end of the road, so to speak.  The phone guys came in record time and got me up and running again, now at a whopping and very acceptable dial up speed of 50.6 Kbps.  Even they were surprised.  And, of course, a usable phone.  I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Dyeing… I love the lace wt. merino / silk.  Dyeing it is a pleasure, knitting even more so.  I find that I have to pay close attention, hardly taking my eyes off the needles so as not to miss the second little stitch on a k2tog or ssk.  I’m used to a slightly heavier yarn for my lace work.  The Swallowtail shawl is nearly up to the change in pattern, the first Lily of the Valley border.  Just another 12 rows …..

In between I walk down to the barn and dye new colors.  The cooler weather is perfect for leaning over the dye pot and the beginnings of the fall colors an inspiration.

    1. What beeeauuutiful yarn you’ve dyed there, Judy. Such nice work.

    2. ooh they’re all so beautiful but i especially love “atlantic”

    3. Gorgeous yarns!

    4. The shawl is looking loverly. Beautiful yarns! I’m partial to Atlantic as well.

    5. Those colors are breathtaking, Judy. And your swallowtail shawl photo is gorgeous. I love the way the leaves compliment the yarn color.

    6. Your colors are inspirational. I have the best fun with your names for the colors, but I also love the fact that they are subtle colorations — much more my style than the huge changes some other dyers make. (Those look nice in the skein, but I don’t like the way they knit up, usually.)
Your phone travails remind me of my childhood. I don’t know how much I could tolerate it nowadays. 🙂

    7. The shawl is beautiful even tho it’s all curled up. And the colors of the yarn! Yuummy!

    8. Oh my goodness. What incredible work you do! Both the dyeing and the knitting… that “Sliprock” is absolutely amazing. Is that what you’re using for Swallowtail? It looks like it might be…

    9. Yummy colors. Stunning. Inspiring. I’m partial to the pokeberry.
Thanks for sharing the early signs of leaves turning. Now that I’m stranded down in the Mid-Atlantic, I have no idea when fall will explode. I do remember that spring came 4 or 5 weeks earlier than in Boston. Will fall be 4 or 5 weeks later?

    10. Manise

Lovely, lovely yarns. Love them all! Is the swallowtail in the ‘Quince’ colorway?

    11. Your shawl is looking wonderful – and those are some beautiful colors :o)

    12. Oh wow, those colors look so gorgeous! All of them. Gorgeous.

    13. Oh my, I LOVE the gourd…is it as golden as it looks in the picture? I may just be overwhelmed by the temptation…LOL
It surely is the season for dyeing, isn’t it? My pots are firing up this week too 🙂

    14. Very pretty yarns.

    15. Your palette of color is so pleasing to the eyes! I love the richness and contrast that you are able to translate from your dye pots to your wool…the skeins look great! Love the way you displayed the swallowtail shawl!

    16. Did you spin that yarn? That is amazing. Very beautiful colors, too. I especially love Gourd and Late Spring Greens.
I admit it. I would have gone totally crazy at the Cherry Tree Hill sale. Love the yarn and a sale? I’m there.
I just finished dyeing a big batch of roving to spin. I hope it dries quickly.

    P1020181 Can you see it?

That picture was last Friday morning.  The hill stands between my house and the Merlin Tree.  I was on my way over for a bobbin tune-up with Dave. I didn’t want to believe it.  Signs are everywhere.  The colors are nearly three weeks ahead of most years.  What does that mean.  The hummers have been leaving.  I have some females now, but the males have left for the season.  I can’t believe that its over, the summer that wasn’t for us in this corner of the world.
From the Merlin Tree, I went into town. The General Store had phone to say my 10lbs of frozen pork livers (for the cats) were waiting.  What I saw was this…

    P1020183  yes indeed..

I followed the sign.. you would have too, admit it.

In small towns like these, street names are usually named for and by the people who live on them.  My road has only two homes, myself and the farm below me.  Its named for the farm.  Keeps it simple.

I had wanted to go into the new facility since last fall.  Honestly, I didn’t find a thing that I wanted.  Certainly nothing I needed.  There were a couple women happily buying, but nothing was singing to me.  I like my stuff better. Guess that was a good thing, anyway that’s me.  There wasn’t much time, the livers were waiting… remember??  Couldn’t have them melting away in the car.  Back in town, in the basement of another store, is Handpaint Heaven.  They are sort of the Cherry Tree Outlet.  Very small.   They DO have some sock yarn I’ve been thinking about.  At $22.00 a skein, I’ve held off.  It’s only a matter of time.

Plants are another matter.  I need more plants about as much as I need more yarn.  I bought these to plant against the old barn.  Now, they SING to me!

    1. I’m sorry but I’m ignoring *those* signs. I don’t want it to be true.

    2. Carole’s ignoring those signs, but I am celebrating them….haha!! I’m looking forward to those crisp fall days ahead, but I do miss the birds when they leave….I miss their morning chatter the most.

    3. Isn’t it a wonderful thing to look at something that someone else has created and think to yourself, wow, nothing wrong with theirs BUT i like mine better… there is nothing like that to re-affirm your creative-ness… oh and beautiful end of summer flowers too

    4. I have a theory (based on the number of critters currently seeking interior access to my house) that it is going to be a long, hard winter. Seriously, the critters are freaking me out a little.

    5. Winter is always long and usually hard up here. I’m burying my head in the sand and refusing to believe until my arse actually freezes over.
I’m saving up for some of your great yarns now. I love fall and sea colours. Most especially the merlot ones.

    6. Lovely colors. Is it heliopsis? I like the rusty one. LOts of cheer by the barn.
Other stuff is late. Clematis ternifolia hasn’t started to bloom yet. It usually starts at the end of August. The miscanthis hasn’t put up seed heads yet. Usually they are visible by now. Only the weeds are on schedule.
I love fall. I don’t love waning daylight.

    7. Well, I must say, I don’t mind the signs. I actually welcome the signs for each changing season. Your signs are lovely. The muted colors. I am very interested in your new plants. Are they an echinacea?

    8. We had a color explotion over night! Picture tomorrow. Fall has arrived but hopefully it will proceed slowly.

    9. *sigh* we have a few of those signs here, too :o(

    10. Oh yes, it’s coming. Y’all had such a mild winter last year, you are probly due up for a whizzbang one this year. Send snow pictures next week when it arrives, k?

    11. The faded green of the trees and bushes not to mention the grasses all say fall is here. The slant of the sun’s rays always is a telltale sign as well. Remember …its’ woolwearing weather 🙂

  • 19.2 Kbps

I can’t figure out if there is something wrong with the internet today, MY internet connections today, or just more lousy phone reception.  I have tried several access numbers.  The fastest, FASTEST, I’ve connected all day is a whopping 19.2 Kbps.  What this means, in terms of blogging, is that maybe I’ll get the picture of the socks up.  IF it succeeds, I will  stop while I’m ahead.  All of the other pictures, on which I spent the past couple hours trying desperately to correct the colors so that they look the SAME color as the yarns they are representing, well…they will have to wait.  (You already can see if the picture is there, not me as I write this, so……) Hold your breath now….here (maybe) are the Trekking socks.

(I know now, after waiting 20 minutes, I have to stop waiting.  I have other things to do.  Pictures, whenever.)

btw.. I took this picture last Tuesday. I didn’t post it sooner because I needed to correct the color on it too.  What IS going on here?

oh yeah.. and that picture of the waves on the water that some of you asked about??  It isn’t an ocean or even a Great Lake.  I took it at Lake Willoughby last Sunday.  I’ve never seen waves like that on a smallish lake either.  It was cold and rainy.  Just. like. today.

ps.  Monday morning and I’ve got a connection at nearly light speed, 44.0 Kbps.  I take what I get.)  Here goes….  12 minutes and counting…  14.. ummmm…I’ll try later.  This is quite the adventure.  another 9 min….  I’ve resized the picture.. I’ve reconnected at 40 Kbps ( a downward spiral, doesn’t feel right) and another try… I’m stubborn.

    Dsc_0099_4

Whew!! Holy smokes!   I’m quitting while I’m ahead.  This may have been the socks biggest adventure.

    1. Our internet access through cable has been painfully pokey since the students came back to the University. Don’t know if that has anything to do with it, usually we have great connections. Atr you going to the VS&W Judy?

    2. I wondered why I haven’t heard from you! Hang in there kiddo…

    3. I hate when our technology bites us back. And for no good reason.

    4. Weird because you’re site opened up super slow for me just now. Pretty socks though!

    5. Great socks. Well worth the wait.
The Internet has been brutal for a while now. We have mega high speed cable internet and some days I swear we only have regular slow speed dial up. I think the main servers in some places are overloaded and the tech people can’t keep up as the internet opens to more and more regular joe webpage writers such as us.

    6. Holy cow. Yay for the socks. I didn’t get mine finished. I was going to try last night, and realized I couldn’t find the famous Margene short-row heel instructions. Yeeeesh. Another time I fail at being a knitalong hostess. 🙂
      P.S. I think we’ll all live.
P.P.S. Can you believe the weather???

    7. Those are beautiful. Like the colorway a lot.

    8. The socks look great and I love the colors in the yarn 🙂

    9. Those socks look lovely..the color is fabulous. BTW- I am really liking that photo of the dragonfly in the post below…what a beauty!

    10. They look marvelous! Thanks for sticking it out to post the picture.
