    Coming late to the game..

The moebius strip was discovered in 1858 by two different scientists, separately and somewhat simultaneously.  It is one of those forms, or surfaces (like a hyperbolic parabola), that lends itself well to knitting.  Cat Bordhi made it easy for knitters with her amazing cast on.  My friend Cindy showed it one night at our Tuesday knitting group.  It intrigued the heck out of me.  I've come late to this party.  Stephanie wrote about Cat's genius almost three years ago.

The easy definition of the moebius strip or band is that it is a surface with only one side and one boundary.  ONLY ONE.

The moebius perfectly illustrates the cycle of life and death, right and wrong, yin and yang.   Why theologians and philosophers haven't used it more as a model has mystified me.  Science / math vs. what?  A proof of faith?

The first time I was shown the moebius strip, I was still in high school.  I was so taken with its implications that I carried a paper model around in my wallet for years.  Something as simple as that.  So many implications.

    1. I love your moebius. The colors, the tassles, the beads…it’s great! I’ve done the lacy version that Cat showed on Knitty Gritty but I’ve never seen one like this. It’s so fun to knit a moebius. Is there a specific pattern for it or did you just test the guage and figure it out from there? I’m definitely going to make one. It’s awesome! Thanks for the inspiration.

    2. I love the moebius and its equally profound mathematical offspring – I wove one in silver once for the sheer fascination of the thing. Perhaps its lack of use as theological metaphor has to do with the prediliction of certain religious movements to divide up the world into dualities – black/white, good/bad, included/excluded.

    3. Nicely done- the colors are so true…and the beads reflect them perfectly…
I really like what you did with the edge!

    4. Oh, how fun! I love it!

A moebius! I love it! And in one of my favorite colors too! Is that your Tashi yarn?? The magpie in me is drawn to the beads 🙂

    6. What a beautiful moebius! I love it! It’s definitely a favorite color of mine too, and I wonder if it is in your yarn?? The beads match it perfectly, although I can’t say I love knitting with beads . . . but, that’s obviously a problem of mine not yours! 🙂

    7. Nice pattern/yarn seletion! I knit a moebius yoked poncho of all things!(2006) Never wore it much except those chilly nights before the wood boiler. Maybe I’ll rip it out , sure took a lot of yardage.

    8. Ah, the shape conundrum makes sense to me know.

It happens to me all the time.  I think of a shape or color, a name, a flavor, or even a kind of car.  Suddenly, I notice it everywhere.  It must be for you too.

    Just the other day..

    1. Good colors! Curves and spikes.

    2. Love the color and the shape. You must share what you’re doing.

    3. I always like when it happens to you and you post about it!

    4. That’s a neat idea.

    5. Can’t wait to see the whole knitted thing! Love the sculpture!

You tease! It is beautiful whatever it is. A cowl-ie thing?? The shape in your knitting and in nature are super cool!

  • walk with me wednesday.. into a monochromatic world

Autumn against a grey rainy day.. what a beautiful relief to the kaleidoscope of color that comes with a New England fall.   The colors seem richer, a palette of tweeds vs. the bright primaries of a sunny autumn day.  Yesterday began that way.  The mist and rain set off the golds of the tamarac.  The russet of end of season oaks and coppery beeches dotted the hills.  'Like lollipops', Chris said.  By late in the afternoon, the temperature was falling and the wind had picked up.  This morning we woke to a monochromatic world.  What a difference, I went looking for color.

The pictures were taken about 7 hours ago.  Seven snowing hours.  It doesn't look like it plans on letting up soon.  I'm looking forward to a warm up the end of the week.  The weather caught me of guard.  I have porch furniture, and planters and the dock to put away.  I hope this isn't a sign that winter will be a copy of last year.

Ack! It’s too damn early for that stuff!! Beautiful, yet sooo cold looking. I am not ready at all. Have this week to complete all of those putting-the-garden-to-bed tasks.

    2. Its pretty but I have just one word. Ugh.

    3. It looks so cold! We’re still in the 70s and loving it. While the first snow is so beautiful it sure gets old come January.

    4. More winter means more knitting time. More spinning time. More fiber time!
Yes, I’m a winter geek *lol*

    5. Beautiful post…I’m glad you went looking for the color.
Not fair to have it taken away all at once like that…I wasn’t ready either.

    6. It looks so pretty but acts so cold. I love snow in December, accept it in January, wish it away in February, and absolutely loath it come March. That year we got it all the way into May? Yikes!

    7. oh no – I am so not ready for that. I live in RI and realistically that could start happening next month. We live on the water so we are usually the last ones in the state to see snow.
Enjoy the indoor time – more time to knit and spin I always say!
      Beautiful pictures!

    8. This just seems awfully early for snow.

    9. Each year, I forget how beautiful a freshly snowed-in world can be. :o)

    10. Wow. You know, if you guys have snow this early, maybe we’ll get some this year! *fingers crossed*
I’m sorry your fall color has ended so soon, though. Maybe it’s temporary!

    11. We ahd some late night flurries but luckily it didn’t stick. I’m just not ready for snow yet! How’s your foot feeling?

    12. I guess you GOT SNOW…………….

    13. Pretty! Somehow, it feels weird to be seeing the pictures on November 1. I’d expect such pics to start showing up at the end of the month. I wonder if this means we’re going to have an early winter this year?
